Must You Win by 2 in Pickleball? The Standard Rule
True for standard pickleball: reach the target score and lead by at least two. See end-game examples, doubles scoring and the team-play exception.

True for standard pickleball. A normal game is played to 11 points, and you must lead by at least two points to win. Reaching 11 alone is not enough: 11–9 wins, but 11–10 means play continues. This applies to both singles and doubles under the 2026 USA Pickleball Official Rulebook, Section 1.
The qualification matters: some formats use different finishing rules, so “you must always win by two” is too broad.
What happens at 10–10?
In a game to 11, once the score reaches 10–10, neither side can win with just one more point. Keep playing until one side leads by two.
| Score in a game to 11 | Is the game over? |
|---|---|
| 11–8 | Yes—11 reached, lead greater than two |
| 11–9 | Yes—11 reached, two-point lead |
| 11–10 | No—only a one-point lead |
| 12–10 | Yes—two-point lead |
| 12–11 | No—only a one-point lead |
| 13–11 | Yes—two-point lead |
You need both conditions: reach the game’s target score and lead by at least two. A two-point lead at 8–6 does not end a game to 11. Nor does “win by two” mean the final margin must be exactly two.
Does winning two rallies finish the game?
Not necessarily. In standard scoring, only the serving side scores points. Winning a rally while receiving does not add a point to your score. The normal doubles serving sequence still applies near the end of the game; there is no special scoring switch at 10–10. See Rules 4.A and 5.B, or use our pickleball scoring guide to track serve.
Try this with four players: start a practice game at 10–10 using standard doubles scoring. Choose a serving team and begin with its first server, calling “10–10–1.” Before each serve, call all three numbers—serving team’s score, receiving team’s score, and server number—as required by Rule 6.B.2. After each rally, check whether a point was earned or only the serve changed. Finish only when one team leads by two.
Checkpoint: All four players should agree on the score and next server. A receiving rally win must not increase that team’s score.
What about games to 15 or 21?
The same two-point margin applies to USA Pickleball’s tournament scoring options, including games to 15 or 21. There is an explicit exception: win by one is allowed for roster-based team play, which is not the same thing as an ordinary doubles game. Rules 15.B.7 and 15.C state that distinction.
For recreational play, agree on the target and finishing rule before the first serve. If your group chooses a hard cap or win-by-one format, treat it as an agreed variation—not the standard win-by-two rule.
